The mighty Neris river that cuts through Vilnius may have formed a thick crust of jagged ice in the blistering cold. But even two weeks of temperatures nibbling -20°c is not enough to tame the smaller, but wilder Vilnia, which joins the Neris at the foot of the iconic Gediminas tower in the centre ov Vilnius. Here, at Belmontas mill, a couple kilometres upstream, the river continues to flow over increasingly thicker layers of frozen waterfall. Thick swirls of frosty steam rises from the bubbling super-cooled water as it cascades down, coating the nearby trees in a thick layer of white frost.
