Cooling down by the Green Lakes

4G0A9836.JPGPerhaps to compensate for the drawn-out sleeting, grey wetness of the winter months, Vilnius has been hit by a remarkable one-month long heatwave. Since the Labour day weekend, it’s been warm and sunny without pause, warming up the lakes and waters around Vilnius to a comfortable 21°c. A 20-minute drive from downtown, the Green Lakes in the Verkiai regional park are a big magnet for city people looking for a place to cool down. From late afternoon on weekdays, a mix of teenagers, families with kids, and sporty types converge on the beach at the south end of Balsys lake, renting kayaks or rowing boats, splashing in the sandy beach or just hanging out with a Spotify playlist and a pair of portable speakers.

  3. Hi there!
Can you tell me whereabouts are the green lakes you write of in the park and how to get there on public transport. We are on honeymoon through 5 countries and trying to wild swim in all. Vilnius was probing tricky till I found this post! Thank you so much, Dee

    • Hi! The green lakes are in Verkiai park, north of Vilnius. You can take bus 36, 66, and 76 to Verkių Riešė, and then it’s a short walk to the lake from there. Alternatively, get a taxi with the eTAKSI app – it’s cheap and a lot less hassle. Here’s a map of the spot to help you out https://goo.gl/maps/ZxDw5vvPJCn. Happy swimming! 🙂
