Jewish tombstones turned building blocks

IMG_5881In the far end of the Užupis neighbourhood of Vilnius stands a monument to the Jewish cemetery that once stood there. After the nearly complete destruction of the Jewish community in Vilnius during the Nazi invasion, the Soviets that took over added insult to injury by carting off the tombstones to use them in the construction of the rapidly expanding city. The memorial that now stands on the site of the former cemetery is made from some of the tombstones that were recovered from the staircases they had been used to build, and stands as a silent testament to the horrors the community suffered. Another Jewish cemetery was demolished by the Soviet authorities, where the Palace of Concerts and Sports now stands, but a third, in Šeškinė district to the North of Vilnius, near the Akropolis shopping mall, is still up and running.
